No Snow, All Sun!

How to Celebrate Christmas in Samaná, Dominican-Style

Dreaming of a “White Christmas”? In Samaná, we do it a little differently. Forget the snow and freezing temperatures; here, a “White Christmas” means white-sand beaches, sparkling turquoise water, and a vibrant, warm holiday spirit that you can’t find anywhere else.

If you’re lucky enough to be in the Dominican Republic for the holidays, you’re in for a treat. Christmas (or “Navidad”) is the most important celebration of the year, filled with music, family, and incredible food.

At Nini Tours Samaná, we’re a local family, and we love sharing our traditions. Here’s a guide to celebrating Christmas just like a Dominican.

The Sights and Sounds of a Dominican “Navidad”

As soon as December 1st hits, the atmosphere changes. You won’t hear “Silent Night” on repeat. Instead, you’ll hear the infectious rhythm of merengue navideño (Christmas merengue) and salsa playing from every colmado (local shop) and car.

You’ll also see unique decorations called charamicos. These are Dominican handcrafted Christmas trees, reindeer, and stars made from dried, white-painted wooden branches. They are a beautiful and rustic symbol of our island holiday.

The Heart of the Holiday: “Nochebuena” (Christmas Eve)

In the Dominican Republic, the main event isn’t Christmas Day; it’s December 24th, or “Nochebuena.”

This is the night the entire country stops. Families gather for a massive feast that lasts late into the night. While you might be at your hotel, you’ll feel the festive energy. If you get a chance, make sure you try the essential Dominican holiday foods:

  • Puerco Asado (Roast Pork): The centerpiece of the meal.

  • Pasteles en Hoja: Similar to a tamale, this is a delicious savory “cake” of plantains and root vegetables, stuffed with meat, and boiled in a banana leaf.

  • Moro de Guandules: Our famous rice with pigeon peas, often cooked with coconut milk here in Samaná.

The Best Holiday Gift? An Unforgettable Adventure.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are often quiet, family-focused days. But the entire holiday week is the perfect time for an adventure.

After all, why come to paradise just to sit still? The best gift you can give your family (or yourself) is an incredible memory. Instead of a crowded shopping mall, how about:

  • A Majestic Waterfall: Make the journey to El Salto El Limón. The hike (or horseback ride) through the jungle, ending with a swim in a cool, freshwater pool beneath a massive waterfall, is a perfect way to feel refreshed and alive.

  • A Trip Back in Time: Explore the ancient, magical caves and mangrove forests of Los Haitises National Park. It’s a peaceful and powerful experience that shows you the true, untouched nature of our island.

  • A Perfect Beach Day: Let us take you to Playa Rincón, consistently voted one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. We’ll handle the transport so you can just relax, swim, and enjoy a fresh fish lunch on the sand.
