Cayo Levantado

Located just a few kilometers from the coast of Santa Bárbara de Samaná, this cayo covers only about one square kilometer. However, its small size belies its importance. It acts as a natural sentinel at the entrance of the bay, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and lush tropical vegetation that creates a stunning contrast against the deep blue of the Atlantic Ocean.

The Science Behind the “Raised” Island: The name “Levantado” (meaning Raised or Lifted) isn’t just a coincidence; it is a literal description of how the island was born. Its formation is the result of a fascinating process that started long before humans ever walked the earth:

• Sedimentary Origins: Most of the island is made of limestone. These rocks formed between 20 and 30 million years ago (during the Miocene epoch) from the accumulation of coral remains and seashells at the bottom of the sea.

• Tectonic Uplift: Over millions of years, tectonic plate movements in the Caribbean pushed these deep-sea deposits upward, causing the island to literally “emerge” or be “lifted” from the ocean floor.

• Natural Erosion: The fine, white sand you walk on today is the result of centuries of waves and wind eroding the surrounding coral reefs and depositing that calcium-rich sediment on the shore.

Because it sits where fresh river water from the mountains meets the salty ocean, Cayo Levantado enjoys a unique microclimate. This allows coconut palms to grow right up to the water’s edge, providing the perfect shade while you watch for Humpback whales, which often pass by the island during their winter migration.
